Our story begins at the Alaska Psychiatric Institute just after Gwen has attempted suicide. She had managed to get through the public school system with not a single person acknowledging she might need or want help, despite horrendous scars and missing fingers and an ear. She begins a journey toward healing and redemption through forgiveness and understanding. This journey takes her into mental hospitals, across the country to North Carolina, Indiana, Minnesota and Vermont, and back inside her own depths of depression and despair as she searches for answers in family and self-growth. Sometimes humorous, and always poignant, this intimate portrait follows her for 5 years and gives us an immense appreciation of the personal demons of mental illness, and the potential healing that can come through hope and love.
