POWFest provides a space where women can thrive as media makers.
We accomplish this by putting strong, women-directed films on screen, growing the next generation of women filmmakers, and making it easier for women to make films.
Festival events feature the work of today’s top women directors, honoring the true pioneers while providing support and recognition for the next generation of leading women filmmakers. We also provide space and support to strengthen the community of women in film.
We love, respect and support the full spectrum of women, honoring our differences and coming together to accomplish great things.
We honor people’s life needs, meeting them where they are and allowing space to live full lives.
We value a collaborative approach, based on cooperation and accountability.
We appreciate people’s contributions, honoring their support and compensating them fairly for the work they do.
We support women-owned businesses and those businesses that are supportive of women.
We strive to be mindful and balanced in everything we do, and always remember to have fun!
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
POWFest’s overall goal is to provide space where women can thrive as media makers. We accomplish this by putting strong, women-directed films on screen, growing the next generation of women filmmakers, and making it easier for women to make films.
During our festival season, which includes both a 4-day festival in March and an extended festival throughout the year, we promote and create professional development and networking opportunities for women filmmakers of every level. We value filmmaker participation throughout the season and strive to bring Portland audiences programming that is thought-provoking and will engage them well beyond the theater.
POWFest has had the honor of hosting a variety of emerging filmmakers and accomplished Directors like Allison Anders, Irene Taylor-Brodsky, Kathryn Bigelow, Gillian Armstrong, Amy Heckerling, Barbara Kopple, Penelope Spheeris, Ondi Timoner, Joanna Priestley and Catherine Hardwicke. The 4-day festival, scheduled for March 2-5, 2017 will feature over 50 films, offering attendees a variety of narrative and documentary programming. Extended festival events allow us to provide focused attention on special programs, providing visibility to women’s work throughout the year. Both experiences are enhanced by filmmaker participation in post-screening Q&As & panels.
It is POWFest’s goal to be inclusive of all women’s voices, regardless of race, class, age, religion, abilities, sexuality or gender presentation. We respect each individual’s right to gender self-identification.
POWFest is produced by Sour Apple Productions in partnership with The Hollywood Theatre.
