AN EXCLUSIVE SCREENING OF THE MOTHERHOOD MANIFESTO, 5.12.07
And fundraiser for the 2008 Portland Women’s Film Festival and momsrising.org

PORTLAND, Ore. – On Saturday, May 12th, the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd) will be showing an exclusive screening of Laura Pacheco and John de Graaf’s The Motherhood Manifesto, a documentary about working mothers in America and how public policy has let them down.  The film brings to the screen many of the characters, experts and stories from the new book by the same name, written by MomsRising Executive Director Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner and President Joan Blades (founder of MoveOn.org).

Moving personal stories combined with humorous animation, expert commentary and hilarious old film clips tell the tale of what happens to working mothers and families in America and how enlightened employers and public policy can make paid family leave, flexible working hours, part-time parity, universal healthcare, excellent childcare, after-school programs and realistic living wages a reality for American families.
Fast-paced and engaging yet carefully balanced and researched for journalistic credibility, The Motherhood Manifesto turns the camera on America’s hidden crisis of caring. The film will play at 1:30PM Saturday afternoon, followed by Q&A with the filmmakers. Admission is $7. Admission proceeds will support momsrising.org and the 2008 Portland Women’s Film Festival, a festival dedicated to celebrating the art and cinematic contribution of women filmmakers from around the world.

Preceding the film the Hollywood Theatre and Milagros (www.milagrosboutique.com) will host a Mother’s Day Market starting at 10:00AM.  Local women-owned businesses that offer creative goods and services with particular appeal to mothers (or anyone with a dear little one in their life) will turn the lobby of the theater into a fun-filled bazaar. Admission to the Market is free but movie ticket holders will also be entered into a raffle and may win wonderful gifts donated by the vendors and local sponsors. Local sponsors include Milagros, Zoom Baby Gear, Karina Potestio, Purple Moon Child Development, Metro Parent Magazine, The LilaGuide, Eclectikid, Blueprints for Footprints, Mother Tree Doula Services, Natural Light Photography, Goosberry, Global Sistergoods, and Zenana Spa and Wellness Center.

As part of the festivities Super XX Man and his band will be bring their gentle musical musings to the lobby of the theater for a free live performance beginning at 11 am.  By day, Super XX Man (a.k.a. Scott Garred) is a musical therapist working in the maximum-security wing of the Oregon State Hospital, by night creates bittersweet folksongs of love and memory with the help of his band: Michelle Garred on accordion, Dave Depper on guitar, Josh Wood on bass, John Vecchiarelli on cocktail kit, and Ali Wesley on background vocals and flute. Sure to soften even the most hardened cynic, this is a show not to be missed.

Super XX Man has released several albums on the locally based mavens of great independent music, Hush Records. According to Bob Boilen of NPR’s All Songs Considered, “If we’re going to choose 10-songs every week, let it be Super XX Man.”  More information can be found at www.superxxman.com.

So bring the family, get informed, and do a little Mother’s Day shopping to boot!

This event is a fundraiser for the 2008 Portland Women’s Film Festival and momsrising.org. POW Fest is a co-production of Sour Apple Productions and Zonker Films, in partnerships with Film Action Oregon.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY COMMUNITY CELEBRATION, 3.08.07
A fundraiser for the 2008 Portland Women’s Film Festival, a non-profit event

PORTLAND, Ore. – On Thursday, March 8th, Milagros Boutique (5433 NE 30th Avenue) will be hosting a community mixer from 5:00-8:00pm in celebration of International Women’s Day.  Born out of the Socialist movement of the early 20th century, IWD is observed annually as a day of recognition for women who have fought against discrimination, for the right to vote, and for emancipation and equality.  It’s also a day to consider how far we still need to go toward a truly equitable society for all.

Bring the whole family and join us for drinks and yummy snacks provided by Vepadoe’s Deli.  We’ll also be screening short films by local and national women filmmakers at 6:00PM, followed by live music from local gypsy rockers Ging Gang (Ghoulie-Ghoulie).

A pay-what-you-can donation is requested at the door; all proceeds go to the 2008 Portland Women’s Film Festival, an event that promotes independent women’s films from around the world.
